Inizia la festa!!! / Let's start celebration!!!

These days, time runs more than me, and inevitably cares occur during and the mood is not just appropriate to Christmas.
I hope that stress will leave place to euphoria, and that the climate around will be festive and not of a general madness.

You'll have to wait a few days to read a new post ...
Meanwhile, I can only hope for a Christmas more fully conscious and of joy, especially without waste!
The 2009 will begin with enthusiasm and desire to do things better, to change what should not be good, to engage ourselves and see our wishes coming true, hoping in some small satisfactions.

I hope that these hopes are the same for all of you!
Enjoy wonderful Christamas holidays!

;Danda

Ps.: Al mio augurio si uniscono ovviamente Irish People e Mister Crama! / Obviously Irish People, and Mister Crama join to my wishes!

SALVA IL TAPPO DI SUGHERO!!! / SAVE THE CORK PLUG!!!

It's a way to recover and reuse a natural insulating material and to promote energy savings in our homes.
It's a simple, concrete and personal gesture that contributes to reduce the consumption of primary energy and CO2 release in the air. One way to avoid the dispersion of a natural material so important that may find considerable uses in construction and enable us to live in more natural homes, even allowing some savings (which, this time, is not unpleasant).
Read the leaflet and also look for the nearest collection point... the initiative is promoted by the Cooperativa Sociale "Artimestieri" of Boves, click the link to their site to see the collection points.

Un altro post pre-natalizio! / Another Christmas time post

Here we are again after about a week. Please forgive my long absence but it seems that Christmas time is full of things to do both at work and in the household affair. I wanted to speak briefly of our two half-days (or almost) to the banquet of Mani Tese and then to remain on Christmas theme, I wanted to show the photos of our Christmas tree more ecological of the previous years.
I begin with Mani Tese of Rimini banquet which was set last weekend for Equamente, organizing a Christmas second hand market. Irish P.'s experience and mine were exciting, despite the offers for items wasn't so much huge. We have attended both as employees and 'buyers'! As employees we were delighted to meet Stella and Bruna, already known at Assenzio, and we knew Alessia, who was with us during the evening on Saturday and two other employees who have preceded us in turn. We gave effort to face the cold of those two days ... but it was nice to exchange cheerful chats and give them a hand to raise funds for the project in Burkina Faso!
We managed – yet moderately for now – to prove to people that used items can be very beautiful gifts and earnings that have nothing to envy those new and packaged. On the bench there was a variety of household goods, items of furniture, books, bags, clothing accessories, Christmas decorations and many other nearly new things that have been donated, in large part, in exchange for an offer!
I found delicious things too, of which however I haven't photos currently: several Christmas cards, two purses, a photo album and a magnificent set of 6 bowls and stack in glazed earthenware!
The best thing of the evening was, however, the super eco pack for the gifts – of which you can see a photo at the top – created entirely from telephone directories paper and decorated by hand, idea by Alessia, also dubbed as the 'sorceress of knitting' for her beautiful knitted and crocheted creations. She argues that many people didn't appreciate it. But we are all sure that people are not yet ready to so these new ecological packaing! You see, Alessia, next year you will launch a fashion! ;-D

The long weekend of 8 December was also favorable to prepare Christmas home decorations, including the tree. In doing so, we remember that last year, buying a fake tree much greater than what we previously had, no lights were sufficient to enlighten. So we armed with bus tickets and we were back in the center, wanting a more serious light. Needless to say that the shops were assaulted by people like us who was desperately searching the latest illumination stocks available. But under the misfortune of having found little choice, instead we made a small 'investment'. At the same price we bought a fantastic series of LED light. The light is somewhat colder than normal mini lights, but the effect is stunning and brightness is very powerful! Look! These lights seem to have a consumption reduced by 1/10th of ordinary string lights and they have a longer life! Then a excellent purchase!

Tenete a mente i miei consigli!
I conclude wishing you a nice weekend, hoping that these days will be more dry than this week and I recommend, be careful buying Christmas gift! Keep in mind my advices!
See you soon with news about the progress of my home composting and recycling...

Grazie ad Alessia per le foto dei pacchi di Mani Tese / Thanks to Alessia for Mani Tese packaging photos

Ad EQUAMENTE, REGALI DI NATALE: RIUSO E RIUTILIZZO / At EQUAMENTE, CHRISTMAS GIFT: REUSE AND RECYCLE

Saturday 6 and Sunday December 7 the association Mani Tese drops in square with Christmas Gifts: Reuse and Recycle, two days of second hand market, in the Equamente event, that will take place in the space in front of the Palazzo del Podestà (in Cavour square), from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
As always it brings the double message from the association: one is the collected offerings that will increase the funding of development project number 2143 in Burkina Faso, micro adressed to farming development (you’ll find more details at the banquet); the other is to raise awareness of people on consumerism and waste exalted by racing to buy gifts in December.
Why not give used objects or books?
Maybe something particular that bears itself much more than a simple gift, a sustainable gesture and an important awareness.
In addition, volunteers will be happy to wrap the selected objects using recycled paper made from telephone directories.
For info: 0541.785305

From Mani Tese, Rimini

And don't forget that even on Saturday 6, from 3 p.m. Christmas 2008: Do the Right Thing will restart: the laboratory for self production of crochet accessories!

P.S.: Irish P. and me will also be there to help girls of association, 30 on Saturday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Don’t you know now? Where Reuse and Recycle are you’ll find me! Hence come and visit me also to exchange some chats! :-D

Acquisti Natalizi Consapevoli / Conscious Christmas Shopping

Then ready for Christmas shopping?
I guess some of you screaming with joy, others with their hands in hair!
Of course, with time running is not the case of going right and left becoming mad to seek gifts.
And even it’s absurd to follow certain recommendations that are given from above to us to save the economy of our Country.
I think instead you must hang on what you have.
Changing brain and stop thinking that buy the new and discard the old are the right things to do for our Country. It hurts, indeed, badly to our pockets, to environment which no more than can engulf every kind of waste and it doesn’t benefit to the industry that would do well to guide the production in a more sustainable direction.

So with an eye to our own pockets and an eye more forward-facing the way of disposing what we buy, we can move more conscientiously on the streets of our cities rejoiced by lights and decorations.
We must aim some targets – I do it too, because I haven’t so many clear ideas –.

We would do well to focus first all recipients of our gifts and calmly decide what to buy for everyone, so as not reducing at the last minutes buying unnecessary and expensive things.

Another thing to do is choose the right place to make purchases. The shopping centres – which now I no longer tolerate as once – are yet a concentration of stores, but they are often scattered and, just because it related to large retailers, they have serial imported items which value will certainly be not unique. Instead you can rediscover the centres of our cities with small shops taht have much to offer and often have things without excessive packaging.

This about packaging is an issue on which we need to leverage. On Christmas let to make our traders we want products with less packaging! Especially if you have children or grandchildren, look for toys made from natural materials or biodegradable, however, with little packaging, no plastic blister. And so with the other gifts.

Avoid buying unnecessary things and maybe ask, at the cost of ruin the surprise. There is nothing worse than accumulate and appliances and items that then we are forced to leave dusty.

Take the habit to discard the plastic bag. I know, is difficult, even Last Saturday it happened to me leaving some shops red with rage because clerks packed like automatons, and even listening you saying “No thanks, I already have my bag!”. Hence always remember to bring back your bags.

Favor the second hand market, maybe there are second hand objects almost new and would not be wrong to give them a second life! The craft markets, but those with real local artisans, can offer something very commendable and certainly more sustainable too.

We can then make ourselves the Christmas baskets going to buy organic, ecological product or from local producers, including addressing to your nearest GAS – excellent opportunity to join, but do it soon, because they close orders in advance! –. Even Fair Trade products are great gift!

Make yourself your Christmas packages, choosing recycled paper and bows or according to your creativity, always with biodegradable or recyclable materials!

Also in the network you can find interesting, economic, and, why not, greener gifts to give! You can also make non-material gifts, how to book a trip, buy a ticket to a show or a sport match...

Don’t forget that the most beautiful things are those that come from heart. If you know someone to help out financially, associations that are voluntary and promote the development of disadvantaged reality, you can buy small items of handicrafts they propose or you can make donations in lieu of a gift.

All this may serve to make the Christmas perhaps most beautiful and less hysterical. We hope to do so!

Throughout the world today, the first in December 2008, was dedicated by the network GAIA (Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives / Global Anti-Incineration Alliance) to the numerous campaigns for incineration alternatives.
In Italy, many were the municipalities which have participated in expressions of disapproval against the policies of construction and expansion of incinerators, a practice that now around the world is slowly dying, contrary to what happens here.
I don’t think we need to get back on my part on a talk already widely treated: various sites and blogs of associations and personalities are caring to collect studies on the adverse effects that incinerators have on our health and environment, proposing valid alternatives such as the door step recycling collection, waste reduction with some very incisive initiatives, the recycling of waste led to mechanical treatment.
All topics already discussed that I will describe from time to time, opening a series of thematic post.

But I want to reassure you: in general, noting that our general reactions, listening to these speeches, are of dismay and fear, when you know the effects of dioxins and nanoparticles, or at the opposite of disbelief especially considering that this is a problem that only politicians can solve.
It is not like that at all. There is a close connection between what we consume and what goes into landfill and subsequently to incinerators. We are a part of the life cycle of materials. Is in this context that we must think and roll up our sleeves, while maintaining a positive and constructive behaviour.
Several times I have heard say that revolutions start from the bottom.
And from our bin – indeed from our bins – of waste I add!

A presto!
In my own real life I set today I wasn’t produce waste to send in landfills or incinerators. I just threw the string sachet of tea in the bin of not-recyclable things.
I decided that my bin will soon be public. You’ll get my bags of garbage – I hope you’ll don’t feeel disgust – and maybe someone will help me to reduce more and more what I cannot recycle.
So see you soon!

Un'idea per i parchi di Rimini / An idea for the parks of Rimini

It is almost past one year since I moved here in Rimini.
The quality of my life has changed, certainly for the better.
A more peaceful life than that one in the capital, where everything had to be done in haste, where distances were too long and not enough time ever, where you had to face high costs for everything, where often simple rules of respect among people lack... and towards environment, at the same way.
And Rimini is the same as a large city in growth, with all positive and negative results, but it's certainly still possible rediscover your dimensions, here in a much more human fit.
This city is often associated to the Italian capital city of entertainment, discotheques, family vacations at the seaside, topic parks ... and this rainbow appears in all its varieties especially in summer, with some impatience, however, by both residents and environment.
But during other seasons, when all this fades, the city emerges on its most beautiful and interesting sides, I think.
Those who come to the sea often not even know the real city, that with the squares and medieval buildings, with fabulous remains of Roman civilization, with narrow streets, inns, shops, multicoloured homes, murals...
They don’t know that there are many beautiful parks where you can run, go by bike, bring your dog, relax reading a book.
And to the parks of Rimini an informal competition was devoted from the Councilor of Environmental and Energy Policy in order to redraw the signs and make them ‘more attractive and less formal’ than usual.
Well, I have a huge passion for the environment and graphics, so I couldn’t miss the opportunity to offer my idea to the city of Rimini. Actually, from the first moment I set foot in this city, I thought that my presence here would only make benefits, because a beautiful city, already stressed by summer tourism, doesn’t longer need a inhabitant which only would uses the resources without help make it better. I date to do so in the short time available and ...
Here is the proposal that I presented, along with that of another participating in the blog Parlandone. It would be nice to collect on that page your comments, your criticisms and ideas for possibly improve the look! We’ll wait for you!

Notizie da RifiutiZero Trapani / News from ZeroWaste Trapani

Next first December there will be the ‘World day against waste incineration and alternatives', launched by GAIA, Global Alliance for Incinerators Alternatives.

This day will be the culmination of a series of meetings and initiatives taking place worldwide, but especially here in Italy, such as the last one we have already seen held in Gambettola, ‘Waste: Reduce and Recycle’ conference. All these moments were designed to reflect on the waste situation that has become untenable in several regions and to exchange ideas, find solutions for disposal and waste reduction, solutions that take health of citizens and love for the environment, for their own land, to heart.

Toward this perspective it is also seen the conference ‘From waste to resources: pathways to a sustainable economy’, which friends of Zero Waste Trapani Onlus organized for Saturday November 29 2008 in the Aula Magna of the University Polo of Trapani, with the sponsorship of the City of Erice and the participation of numerous organizations and associations.

The interventions, which start at 4.30 p.m., will see players such as Rossano Ercolini, co-coordinator of the National Zero Waste Network, Carla Poli, entrepreneur of the Recycling Center of Vedelago, Paul Connett, professor of environmental chemistry and the toxicological at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, and theoretical Zero Waste Strategy, and several other prominent figures in business and environmental policies.

Happy for having already heard previously these so important voices, full of enthusiasm and desire to change the current situation, opening our eyes to those who don’t yet accept the idea of reduce and reuse waste, we can only strongly recommend to participate in this next meeting, you’ll come back with huge optimism!

A presto!
And soon I’ll return to talk of interventions took place during the conference of Gambettola, speaking from time to time of the individual personality, to give a taste about the themes of proposals and initiatives already addressed to people who couldn’t listen to them. Write you soon!

Un bianco risveglio... / A white awakening...

Do you remember the hedgehog a few days ago? Well, perhaps I understood why he was here. We know that animals have an incredible sensitivity for the weather ... perhaps he was sniffing an air of ... snow and was looking for a warm place where to stay on these cold new days! And here this morning to our sleepy eyes images of... snow were presented!
Well, the snow came so far, a slight white mantle held for a few hours the gardens and sand of the beach ... we leave you to the vision of these pictures taken by IrishPeople ... and we hope to see the snow again, perhaps on Christmas time!

Che bella sorpresa oggi in giardino! What a nice surprise today in the garden!

Starting from some days ago, little birds, robins, blackbirds and great tits are around my house, looking for something to eat. And what is more that someone is removing the place where they get a nest or pause in tranquility, as they are pruning all major trees of the avenues.

But today, while I was looking for a more sunny place to dry clothes, and I was distracted by the flight of a scary robin, I turned and I looked down to not stumble with the clothes horse, and under
the edge of the porch, on the floor, I found… try to guess what?

A small close hedgehog! He was alive and with the lively little eyes moved slowly in search of something. I approached to him and he didn’t move. He seemed not to be afraid!
Then I rushed home to take something that he maybe needed. I took a small pear and put it near him. He still didn’t move. Then I moved a few minute again and when I went back to check the pear was always there, but the hedgehog was vanished. Instead there was the neighbor’s red cat who had just rushed from the gate. She saw me and was coming meowing with a smart air, as if to say “I don’t know anything!”.

Eh eh!
Eh eh! This was just an unexpected encounter, despite that, a long ago, my companion found the sting of a porcupine in front of the house gate indeed!
Finding animals typical of the campaign, here at the sea, is not a normal ting... or there’s something wrong in the country... or it was spread the voice that someone here is more hospitable :D

Visitando Ecomondo per la prima volta / Visiting Ecomondo for my very first time

E a voi buona lettura!
As promised, here there's a brief about my first visit to Ecomondo.
A long report that my dear friend blogger 'MadreTerra' wanted to publish on her blog always full of 'green' ideas, updated on news concerning the environment. I want to thank the author that hosted my post, with her great ecological sensitivity that surprises me every day with her work. Well done!
And to you, enjoy reading below!

Saturday, 8 November, Ecomondo, the 12th International Trade Fair of Material & Energy Recovery and Sustainable Developement, in contemporary with Key Energy, International Trade Fair for Energy and Sustainable Mobility, Climate and Resources for New Development, ended. There were nearly 65,000 total visitors, 12% more than the last year, a trend that is steadily increasing. More than 1,000 companies exhibited their products and services dedicated to the environment, there was a massive media presence and I hope this is good.

During the four days many topics were discussed: waste and packaging complete cycle, rehabilitation of polluted areas, water cycle and analysis of integrated systems of water control, renewable energy and efficiency, energy markets, hydrogen and sustainable mobility, air quality, risk and environmental damage, services for environment, national and international responsibility for protecting the environment. In short, an appointment rather than single, addressed primarily to professionals and businesses from Europe and Many countries around the world.

Certainly many simple ‘curious’ visited this international exhibition too. For non-experts in the field a vast panorama of technologies has first deployed in their eyes. Noting those things, you can be very hopeful that, in all industrial areas, a decisive change in positive, regarding attention to environmental issues, will happen very soon.

Obviously in a single day, the last, it was difficult to me visiting all stands, especially because many stands were emptied with before the closure. The fair is huge (about 85,000 square meters) and this year has occupied all pavilions, 16 available in all. Each pavilion, hosted in diverse sections devoted to specific ‘Special projects’, was interspersed by parking areas and very interesting exhibitions, especially for the curious.

Beginning from the latter, I can admit, for my professional way to see things, to have been attracted mainly by the hall and many corners of the pavilions dedicated to ‘Eco Fatto’, an overview on manufacturers and designers of recycling, where you can admire masterpieces of industrial design and manufactured goods, made with more unthinkable materials: chaise longue, desks, chairs and library wavy board made, by ‘Idee di cartone’, the aluminium benches, or the pans, the ‘Ricicletta’ in 100% recycled aluminium, the modern tire bags realized by designer Heidi, recycled glass sculptures and additions furnishing, with candles in glass and wax, with armchairs, walkways, playgrounds and off made by recycled plastic, to comfortable and colourful ottomans always made by inner tubes ... In short, there’s a well of new materials and creative ideas. I am naturally tempted to ask myself: “Who said that recycled objects are bad?”

Starting from the west entrance of the fair I were able coming into the ‘Save!’ exposition. I was immediately amazed at the sight of huge machinery and trucks dedicated to waste recovery and cleaning. I add that, seeing the huge amount of these technologies, I had the impression that we are still very far away from the idea of little compaction robot that recently made us laughing and reflecting to the cinema. Waste is something very cumbersome and in some cases very heavy ... from our home garbage is very difficult to realize it and here you cannot help but notice!

Walking in zigzag between corridors, you continue entering into local and international reality, having a more deep knowledge of companies that provide environmental services: for example, I can cite regional Hera, which has set up a huge container stand, as “Hera House”, an interesting virtual corridor, set for calculate your household consumes.
It was also interesting to hear some examples of ‘ecological islands’ furniture, super-equipped for the collection of hazardous and bulky waste such as WEEE (electrical and electronic equipment waste). A waste to which Ecomondo has dedicated a series of special conferences, titled “WEEE system”, to know and discuss new rules on their disposal.
Each service company not only had showcase of their technologies, but has also provided data, information, and everything can serve to experts in the field and not, for better moving on disposal of waste.

In the main exhibition, to give a value to the “Waste as resource”, it was given space to technologies for the recovery of various types of waste: in particular scrap metal (with the ‘MetalEco’project), the inert construction and demolition (the ‘Inter Tech’ project), rubber and pneumatic equipment (the ‘Just Rubber’ project), waste derived from computing products (‘Ri3, Regenerate, Reload, Reuse’ project), and WEEE. But there have been numerous stand on organic waste, with demonstrations on industrial and household composting, wood, with the exhibition of recycled wood artefacts, paper and cardboard, exhausted oils and glass. The plastic has not been ruled out, indeed one of the few areas in which you could see live how some systems separation mechanics, currently on the market, work, especially for those who are incredulous about how the recycling is after collection.
It was also curious to see how, in almost all the stands, waste is transformed into perfectly usable materials, with the exposure of samples by all sorts, from copper extracted from cables and reduced into powder, to the various types of plastic granules.

Other large exhibition spaces (interesting for the professionals, somewhat less for the curious) have been dedicated to businesses that reclaimed territories and waste water (in-depth projects ‘Reclaim Expo’ and ‘Blue Gold’) that exposed available technologies and facilities, types of assistance, rehabilitation techniques, used products.
No less noteworthy but still facing the industry, were stands of exhibitors on renewable energies such as solar, photovoltaic, wind, biogas and bio fuel.

Among the major pavilions, some rooms have hosted the communication exhibitions on ‘Sustainable Cities’, interesting paths in private architecture and urban design thought with sustainability criteria, recovery and energy saving. Looking at the exhibition panels, masterfully made with cardboard and pallets from recovery, you had the impression of being significantly at the cutting edge of design and technology, but still far from the time when these architectures will be easily accessible to every type of citizen.

There was also a way to the island location of ‘Sustainable Purchases’. A section I imagined wider, but it offered a good number sold greener products, including solar gadget, office tools made of recycled or compostable material, cleaning and hygiene greener products, accessories and clothes from Fair Trade, themed books and toys by natural materials.

I must include the large space devoted to Conip (National Plastic Packaging Consortium) and Conai (National Packaging Consortium), the last with its wide range of areas, Cial (aluminium), Comieco (paper), Rilegno (wood), Corepla (plastic), Coreve (glass) and the National Steel Consortium. Together with Tetrapak Italy – who finally showed the recycling products by carton coupled to plastic aluminium packaging, ‘Carta Frutta ®’ and ‘Ecoallene ®’ – all have made available numerous paper advertising campaigns that unfortunately at the end of the fair, were abandoned, becoming waste itself. They could be collected and redistributed to local schools, at best and I hope that at least they have been recycled!

Really this edition, which has not overlooked any detail and every minimum area related to environment, could in turn generate countless other events in order to deepen knowledge in every single part.
I must admit, though, that I hadn’t a good impression seeing the general flee of the exhibitors as early as the first Saturday afternoon, when common people, who normally work outside the context of the sectors concerned, could deepen their knowledge of a world in which they are still bound by and still treated as if they were not a key component for the correct cycle of materials.
I would have liked that the fair had lasted until Sunday, involving both schools (for which there were numerous laboratories), the ‘curious’ visitors, perhaps viewers even more important than political and TV show authorities, here invited. I would have liked to talk directly with the experts in the field and not to turn between the empty benches for scraping written information, and I would have liked to see evolving Ecomondo in the years, involving many more people and organizations.
I wish to Ecomondo – this event that for four days literally upset the city of Rimini – that in the future it will become a national event ever larger, involving at the same time companies, authorities and citizens, so that we can work together for preservation and respect of this unique world in which we live.

Da ricordare… / To remember…

Since the beginning of the month, some events have quickly happened that had to be absolutely ‘photographed’ and mentioned unfortunately all together here, because time is always short.

Cominciamo dall’ultimo.
We start from the last one.

Yesterday was a very special day, my 36th birthday, and at same time, the first day of presidency of Barack Obama in the United States of America.
A historic day. There were celebrations all over the world, symptom that something is changing.
I was thrilled to see that people are changing their way of thinking in relation to solidarity among peoples, to justice, to exploitation of resources of the planet and to attention towards environment.
I hope that this change could spread to every country in the world, until getting here in Italy, where we are too sleepy and resigned to worse.

Joy and hope have been the first gifts received by the word exchange on the web.
The rest of the day was a succession of smiles, greetings, positive comments ... I wish that every day could be this way!
Happiness was then extended by the beautiful ‘green’ gift of my companion, who now understands and shares my love for nature: a green gift in the true sense of the term, a magnificent fuchsia and white orchids plant in its earthenware vase decorated with ribbons and veil that certainly I can reuse.
Inspired by the desire to do holiday I made biscuits. Then the evening ended in a dinner outside in a small delicious inn. So we toasted to this day to remember.

Returning back this week there were other things worth noting.

Last Monday we learned something new and amazing: the doorstep recycling collection is extended to the waterfront districts of Rimini! Soon we will have a kit for waste differentiation, to achieve the recycling objective by 40% in the new year (and we hope to surpass it!).

Last Tuesday we were at the projection of a beautiful documentary movie, “The Planet”, scheduled for the event “Ecomondo in town”. In short, we have witnessed a masterpiece that won last Torino movie festival dedicated to environment. A storm of images cleverly mounted on a special music, created ad hoc, alternating speeches by many important scientific and literary people in the world including the notorious Lester Brown. An excellent opportunity to reflect, but at the same a call to mobilize to stop the dripping of this our single Planet.

Even before the weekend I have been taken by the desire to do something homemade.
So I prepared the dough for biscuits with flakes chocolate, which I offered yesterday.
I also dedicated to a work that was in my mind for some time: two scented candles, reusing the old wax of candle which wick had been consumed.
Melted wax in a pan – which now is used only do this –, I mixed a few drops of essential oil of Melissa I bought time ago, and then I paid the wax in two glass containers, previously prepared with a new wick, a chipped glass and a container of tomato sauce. The glass remains to complement candle instead the bottle was broken in a paper cabinet - and then properly recycled - to leave the candle.

Prossimamente ne racconterò i progressi.
During the same weekend we started to composting! Located in the garden place we decided, we prepared a bottom layer of branches and dry leaves, then we superimposed soil, brown paper cut into pieces and the first layer of wet kitchen waste, including Halloween pumpkin, made small pieces. So we started our adventure into the world of home composting. Soon I'll tell the progresses.

So we expect to go on Saturday to visit Ecomondo. Meanwhile today even the TV-journal of RAI 1 has spoken about the fair... then it means that something is really changing!

Thus, in a few days, this first week of November will end in a emotional turbine, bringing back memories and nurturing new hopes...

Riflessioni sul convegno / thoughs about the meeting RIFIUTO: RIDUCO e RICICLO

Ci piacerebbe leggere i vostri commenti... A presto!

With the post of IrishPeople that comes before my introduction (and in the screen view follows), a series of posts about last meeting about waste in Gambettola is opened. We want to publish all information collected during the conferences. Every time we'll spread out more details on each talk.
I remember everyone who want to see them by video, there are some parts on the blog
No Inceneritore Raibano.
We'd like to read your comments, it's a delicate issue, but it regards all of us! Write soon!

Two days in Gambettola for the first Italian conference about the theme of waste, reducing, recycling. Two days of meetings, debates, panel discussions, exchange of information, projects, ideas, concrete and real things about which, during years, municipalities, mayors, councilors, employers, voluntary associations and ordinary citizens are trying to raise awareness in order to understand that there is an alternative way even to save this unique world we have.
It will be difficult to summarize in a few lines the large amount of information and examples that we have got to know (and we participated only on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning), but what I would be able to do is simply send some messages, something that can induce everyone to take some thoughts.
The first major issue raised is that there is really an effective alternative to incineration (pardon, ‘thermo-valorization’, like our politicians call them) and to see it you doesn’t need the crystal ball or the magic wand. It’s just going to see examples of municipalities of Capannori (in Tuscany), and Colorno or Monte San Pietro (here in the Emilia Romagna region) emerged in the debates, in order to know how administrations have been able to operate the ‘door-to-door’ waste collection (not the journalist Vespa’s tv programme, as repeatedly mentioned by Paul Connett during his speech), the use of tap water in canteens and in public buildings, the use of washable nappies in the nursery, the banning of cutlery and disposable plates. All with a positive return from their own citizens who have simply admitted that “we’ll never come back on our steps.” On the other hand you turn on TV and see, or rather hear: politicians say that “supporting incinerators” is a good and right thing.
It’s time to say ‘stop’ to these people who don’t have the slightest idea of what they are speaking of, and who claim to be always right without having the slightest sense of making questions to themselves. An Italian conference on this issue is without any important politician here, any news on national television, but it could be enough for a political action, take a few notes and go to slap them in the face of that people who still talk about incinerators, nuclear, or similar things.
Metioning the most important interventions, there were those of Connett, of Montanari, or the counciliors Boschini (Colorno) and Ruggeri (Monte San Pietro), the manager Nervi, or that one of Mrs. Zappalà, from the ‘Basilico’ association, who was enabled make us know reality as Finland, where, staring years ago, they are equipped for composting human waste (the shit!) at home. Or that industrial reality in the Veneto region where they are able to recycle 100% of the waste by technologies that are now exported to Korea, Singapore, France, Belgium and Holland. These are just to mention some of the wealth of information circulated among experts, politicians and citizens who understand that there are ways to drastically intervene on a problem that in Italy is becoming increasingly serious and urgent.
In February 2009, the conference will move to a town in the south of Italy and we hope that here this second event is increasingly able to spread this news and bring to light those realities that are very close to us. It should all start from us, ordinary citizens of all social backgrounds and different political ideas, that, alarmed by the changes investing environment in which we live, decide to learn, to examine the issue and find alternatives, in order to participate in some decisions taken by government. A normal country would see this as moment of democratic growth, as a citizen’s approach to politics. On the contrary we don’t talk about it, and try to hide it but a conscious person is not willing to be a silent subject. Perhaps now we tend too often to underestimate the capacity of the individual and the commitment that could generate more by the individual. The best guarantee against the possible manipulation, however, is precisely to know and understand, and who participated to this meeting, during these two days, has certainly got a possibility to know and understand.
