Giorni pieni di emozioni / days full of emotions

Ci contiamo! ;)

Briefly, because it is worth talking about it, I remember that those days i spent were beautiful and dense of emotions!

First of all, during a
'ligàza', I met more closely my friend and blogger Cristella. A wonderful person with a thousand facets. Her pen makes pages coloured of a thousand shades and her heart is biting for many things: family, friends, voluntary associations, traditions, love for her city (the same of mine)... for me it is incredible to be arrived here recently and found a person like that! Cristella is always a surprise, with thousands of ideas ... also very environmentally friendly and cozy!

Then I attended
the virtual party for the anniversary of the blog The Rubbish Diet. It was as if I had attended really a feast, because Almost Mrs. Average was been able to convey in her post and comments all those who supported her blog, and that who write about their respective ones, communicating all the efforts they are doing to reduce waste and a to have a more sustainable life. We felt all united in a common way of thinking and it was very beautiful, encouraging, especially considering that we are around the world! Moreover, in the following days, Mrs. A. wrote a extraordinary post about her efforts to reduce waste: they shouldn't turn into an obsession, but in a fully natural lifestyle, without feeeling disappointed if you cannot or if you are hampered by the world around! She said that trying it anyway costs nothing but the only reviewing of habits and I fully agree with her!
As if there were not enough she posts
excerpts of her daily life to show that these new habits are fully compatible with a normal existence! For
me she is still a great example!

Finally, I met on the web two formidable readers, which are even appearing in the list of readers blog, in the side column.
One is Layla, Slovenian, she is trying to change her daily routine on a more sustainable life and would like to write you a blog. We'll support her and try to encourage each other, even because the closeness of our nations makes feel us most similar in thoughts and real issues!
The other,
Mirna, I discovered to be a creative person and multifaceted: she is the author of several blogs which show her deep artistic vein and a strong flair for interiors decoration. Mirna is a designer, graphic designer, she paints, creates sculptures and above all, what surprised me, she has a deep love for the land where he lives, farming and care with passion!

Surrounded by all these wonderful people and happy to hold on the support of many readers that every day come to honor me with a visit (now 6000!) I can only feel encouraged to continue to post. A tip ... sometimes detach your eyes from the various social network and get to give your greetings here! We care! ;)

Uno sguardo al nostro HWRC / One look at our HWRC

HWRC?
Brava, Mrs. A., continua così!
HWRC? Have you ever heard this acronym? Now I will explain.
First, I begin this post with the best wishes for the anniversary blog to my English blogger friend, Mrs. Average, which I inspired me in undertaking certain topics, in particular the reduction of waste, as a source of improvement of own and others lives. Brava, Mrs. A., hold on!
And she made me know this word in a comment to her post. Among the English ‘garblogger’ this acronym is used for indicating a sort of home station for the recycling of garbage (Household Waste Recycling Centre).

As previously mentioned, this year we want to program a zero waste week and, as suggested by the blogger, before starting such a challenge, is better to do some calculations just looking in our bin.
Yes, exactly, you just understood it! Who would calculate how much trash is producing at own home? It seems absurd, but you can learn a lot of things.
So firstly I’ll show our HWRC, aware that it could be changed, depending on the doorstep collection (which I don’t lose the hope of seeing here)!

Meanwhile I say before that we are two at home and that the room where we set recycling is very tight. In the kitchen there is a compartment under the sink that was originally used to store various detergents. Now a half is occupied by a large blue plastic bag, very resistant, bearing the inscription ‘glass and cans’. This was part of a bag set that I had in Rome and which included the one bag for paper and one for plastic. In the move I took one only for lack of space, and so this has become somewhat a ‘cauldron’ for recycling! Inside, I put two bags. In a paper one to collect paper and cartons for recycling, which are then carried out into the paper blue bin, while in a polyethylene bag we used to put aluminium, plastic and then brought to the yellow bin of light packaging. These two inside bags are replaced only when they are stressed but they are strictly recycled, respectively, with paper and plastic.
On average, we download the contents of the two envelopes when they’re full, ie every 15 days.
Trying to weigh the two figures, we see that for the first has an average weight of 1.7 kg for the second around 0.25 kg.

Glass is collected separately. Every time some we put aside bottles or jars, we take them immediately to the green recycling box of glass, entering containers one at a time.
As regards the glass, we can say to recycle not more than 3/4 containers a week (about 1 kg).

Then we have, in the one empty corner of the kitchen, a trash with two removable containers: one is of 8 liters, the other of 12. So far, when we decided to collect the wet organic fraction, this was put in the compartment of 8 liters, while the other had the bag of undifferentiated rubbish. From time to time we however noted that being the humid waste most voluminous, we had to take out it more often. Then we exchanged the their locations.
The average humid waste (about 1.5 kg) is recycled every ten days, but don’t be afraid! When it is placed in special biodegradable bags, separated from other waste, doesn’t smell. Moreover, there is the composter coming to help us.
The remaining non-recyclable waste (about 0.2 kg each 10/15 days) is really a small part, and often consist of mixed plastic film, especially from certain foods, dust and other components of non-recyclable packaging.

Other kind of waste, that we collect more rarely and may be recycled in other ways (oil, light bulbs, batteries, metal items, etc.) are stored apart in discrete spaces of home furniture and bring to the local municipal recycling centre or other outlets collection (as we are planning to do for the cork stoppers).

The composter, that is out in the garden, accepts fresh food waste (fruit peels, vegetable scraps), and small garden pruning with the exception of those that are not easily biodegradable. We do not have the problem of animal waste such as meat and fish (except when we have guests) for our vegetarian diet, but we store the waste of cheese in humid and egg shells in the composter. We are filling the compost very slowly, but on the third month, it seems that everything proceeds well and according to plan, later this month we will use a activator biological degradation dust that will speed the process, since the early winter was cold and wet.

To sum up our personal HWRC is very simple and of few pretensions. Indeed, precisely because the space is tight, we have no intention to devote more space to containers for recycling.
Our efforts should focus more about purchasing and consuming less packaged products. Where we fail we will ensure that the packaging is at least recyclable.

A presto!
So next step will be to make a list of products that we usually consume with a non-recyclable wrapping. In this way we can explore alternatives. A few choice was already made, but that we will see later. That’s everything for the moment.
And how are you organized at home for recycling? I would like to know a lot! See you soon!

N.B.: sotto il grafico della quantità di rifiuti prodotti a settimana in Kg / below you can see the graphic about waste generated each week in Kg

Carta / paper = 0,8 Kg Imballaggi leggeri / light pakaging = 0,12 Kg Umido organico / organic waste = 1,05 Kg Indifferenziata / non-recyclable waste = 0,14 Kg Vetro / glass = 1 kg

Per le neo-mamme / for the just mothers

I should have done it on Christmas but, as a small present, I want to dedicate this new post to my friends just mothers and their babies.

Some time ago I was recommended by my friend Niky, then pregnant and now happily mother, a post on ‘washable nappies’.
I had already had the occasion to hear this news through various blogs, especially those I follow in English. In reality washable diapers sounded to me immediately familiar... when I was a child I still remember that at my sister’s birth, were used for her panties in cotton (or bands) and diapers with sizes smaller than current. Even then less waste is produced, but the change of them could be a disaster!
Today washable diapers are just like those disposable ones, because made of materials for safer proof, easy to clean, durable and available in various sizes.
But why use washable nappies?

In secondo luogo l’aspetto economico.

First, it reduces the environmental impact: can you imagine the mountain of non-biodegradable waste that children’s diapers can create all over the world every days, given that a child up to 2-3 years of age use from 6 to 8 diapers a day? Get accounts: from 4000 to 8000 diapers each born!
Whereas disposable diapers use about 500 years to decompose, imagine the act of environmental damage!

Secondly, the economic aspect. I remember vaguely that five years ago we were asked to buy diapers for our just born granddaughter: I was stunned seeing the prices of packages of disposable nappies! According some calculations for disposable ones 2,000 euros on average is spent for every child in its first three years. Washable nappies are a little more expensive (each one), but you buy once in a small number and can reuse in the event of a new birth with no charge!

Last but not least, the health of the child! The disposable diapers contain plastic chemical substances that are considered harmful to humans. Have you ever wonder why the diapers keep the feeling as ‘dry’? Have you ever wondered what are the substances that turn the pee in ‘gel’?
Washable nappies, in good condition, keep the sensation of dry, and more they have the part at contact with the skin made of natural fibres that allow perspiration. Some mothers have argued that they are more humid than disposable, but paradoxically this makes children grow more willing to get rid soon of the diaper.

Many mothers already use washable diapers and there are even network forums where you can exchange opinions and recommendations. In addition, many virtuous municipalities, that have adopted the Zero Waste Strategy, have also adopted washable diapers at the nursery school.
This to show that this is not a return to our grandmothers’ time, as somebody may think, but the use of this practice can make us more civil and respectful of the land on which our children will live! We still have too many prejudices to refute, too many comforts to which we are used that will cost dear to us in the near future.
I understand that today lifestyle bring us to have less time and choose the convenience, but it worth at least to try, to be informed! There are also biodegradable diapers for those who find really difficult to accept to return to washable, even if that option is less ecological than latter, in terms of using resources.
I am not still a mom, but I am convinced that the day I’ll became mother I’ll try to experience them.
And I am also willing to experiment with the washable pads, having already moved on to greener ones. I’ll update about it despite this is an issue on which even there are too many taboos.

Una minaccia molto vicina! / A very close threat!

The post I mentioned in my first post of the year awakes a "fiery" theme, the construction of new incinerators to deal with various waste emergencies on our national territory.
This time, however, the problem concerns us very closely and we are greatly concerned.
The province of Rimini already has an incinerator around Raibano, located just inland near Rimini and Riccione. The local municipal waste collection service, Hera, who is dealing with the same collection of waste to recycle, is implementing an expansion project of existing incinerator with a new line, which should burn from 90,000 to 120,000 tonnes of waste
year, nearly twice the active line.
Figures to be particularly afraid for the dreaded nanoparticles that this new furnace put in the air and we well know the risk of diseases that may result for inhabitants of the whole province.
In addition, considering the fact that the recycling facilities are increasingly expanding in the territory, especially with the expansion of the doorstep collection, the risk that the new line of incinrator become a furnace to burn special and toxic waste from other regions is becoming greater.
We hope that instead of this new line will be rather built a plant for mechanical biological treatment of separated waste, for recycling 90% of the waste and using the remainder 10% as aggregates for various uses, as the
Recycling Center of Vedelago does.
To make this true, however, we must be increasingly aware people about the problem and join our voices.
Those wishing to join our call may support the group
No to incineretor of Raibano, Yes to separating waste technology on Facebook. Meanwhile, to think about it I suggest the vision of the video above (Italian langauage).

Bentornati e buon 2009!!!

Welcome back to Dandaworld and happy 2009 to everybody!

Sorry for my long absence, but work and holidays made me far from any of my favourite activities, to write on this blog.
How were holidays? I was around beautiful Italy, as always, to spend happy time with family. I and Irish avoided to leave by our car, abandoning traffic on motorways, so we left by bus and then back by train.
We had the opportunity to review my land, Apulia, and then Abruzzo, where we enjoyed a panorama of snow-covered mountains. The grip of cold has kept us everywhere and coming back here in Romagna we’ve felt it even more.
Despite the cold, days were happy, especially because there we heated with the warm of family and friends and our return was easier, especially resuming our daily lives with a nice strength, even if...

Listening to news we haven’t the impression that 2009 will be a great year: economic crisis, war, lack of energy resources, unemployment, poor policy choices...
It will be a year in which we have to roll up our sleeves and get down to work hard! And not only talking about productivity, but above all personal commitment to improve our lives, society and the territory in which we live. Do not expect that there are always others to give us good news but commit yourself to make a decisive impact is in all things that don’t work along!

So before I start to post the topics that we prefer, I ask to all of you who read the Dandaworld to open your mind and think with a different head. Last year, the blog has reached over five thousand visits and I was very happy, because it means that what I write interested to someone. I’d like, however, to listen to your voices, especially those who for the first time visit my pages and read something that strikes you. Many of you are quietly seeking ideas for improving your daily lives, seeking answers to questions, seeking solace in friend words. I am here for you, write me, ask me, give me ideas for research and discussion, and I promise you I will be more present.

I’m beginning the new year with a rough subject on which many prefer to keep quiet.
Maybe this year there will be more devoted to post critical topics. But I’m not failing to post the most amusing and curious ones, some posts that will serve as practical guides and small snippets of my life, where I will focus mainly on reducing household waste.
This year I’ll deal, together with my partner, the challenge of a zero waste week and I’ll announce the period soon. So progresses will be done and there will be goals to be achieved.
If I were in your shoes I will not lose anything...
I would remind you that you can follow the blog through the rss feed (see icon down in the left column) and you can send your mail to the usual address danda.sign@gmail.com.
See you soon, and don’t miss it!
